Sample Lab
Branding and Art Direction
Details
DISCOVERY/INSIGHTS: The K-beauty industry is one of the most innovative cosmetics markets in the world, and one of the least accessible. The gap wasn't in the products. It was in the pipeline, and the brand needed to convey just that.
PROBLEM DEFINITION: Sample Lab needed a brand with a clear point of view, built with enough openness that any brand could see themselves inside it. The identity had to hold both the precision of a Seoul-based manufacturing operation and the approachability of a North American consultancy, without collapsing into either.
DESIGN SCOPE: Art direction was developed with the intention toward something soft and hazy, a visual mood that feels like possibility rather than prescription. The wordmark was constructed by combining letterforms drawn from the breadth of brands Sample Lab serves, a quiet nod to the collaborative, client-centred nature of the work. The website uses continuous scroll to mirror the open-ended nature of the service: no hard stops, just one phase flowing into the next.
IMPLEMENTATION AND OUTCOME: Sample Lab launched with a brand that makes a complex, cross-continental process feel open and navigable. The identity, imagery, and website work together to close the gap that defined the problem: any brand, at any stage, can see itself and its product in it.
